I am now on the end of my third roomba. Even with meticulous maintenance, they rarely last more than 3-6 months of daily use. The only reason that I have continued to purchase them is because even at 3-4 Roombas per year, they are cheaper than hiring someone to vacuum my office floor daily. If you can make a similar ROI, then buy one. However, I am anxiously awaiting for someone to produce one of these that lasts.
Love the ease this product gives my lifestyle!

It’s easy and amazing. The only downside is the noise it makes when running on my wood and tile floors. My floors are spotless now and even under the beds! I have pets, so now we are almost hair free. I rotate the rooms I roomba each day and it does a great job! Now that I know how great it is, I will definitely spring for the more expensive, pet model next time, maybe it will be quieter.
Rosie is the best!
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
I have two Norwegian Forest cats and a poodle and live in a historic building with hardwood floors. Fur (and lets face it + cat litter) have been a never ending battle for me. Well not since we brought Rosie into our home she is so wonderful. It doesn’t seem to matter how busy I am and if none of the other household cleaning is done. It is a hugely satisfying to come home to perfectly clean floors.
For those of you that have cats, my boys -the yetti cats were and are very interested in the Roomba, but are also cautiously weary. They will follow it around for a few seconds until it turns around and then they scramble for a higher vantage point and mearly watch it cruise along. My dog could care less. She hardly seems to notice it.
Rosie does such a good job cleaning up the Yetti fur and everything. For those of you with hard wood floors and long haired cats you know that the cat hair has a way of becoming like tumble weeds – well not any more. This Rosie ROOMBA does an amazing job. I wish that I hadn’t waited so long to get her!
Wonderful, but keep the receipt!

This is a wonderful device (I have the red 410 model). I have two indoor, long-haired cats (hair and little box sand everywhere!) and two little kids who live on crackers, cereal, and anything else that makes crumbs, and now my floors are just always clean. The thing is a miracle–right up there with the dishwasher on the scale of “how did I ever live without this?” HOWEVER, keep the receipt and the warranty information handy. Since I bought it in April (this is August), I’ve had to replace the dust bin once, the battery once, re-calibrate the virtual wall (at home, but still required a call to tech support), and mail in the whole rest of the contraption twice (all free while under warranty, but a pain to have to live without it for the time it’s not working well or in the mail). Buy it, but be willing to be frustrated and patient!
I love it!

I have two dogs, a corgi and a chichuchua and this vacuum works wonderfully picking up the dogs hair specially the corgi’s hair. Any corgi owner knows how these small dogs shed. I name my vacuum “Jaime” and he does a wonderful job. The only bad thing is that the screw that holds the little side brush became lose and the brush came off. However, the vacuum still works and only thing I need to do is order a spare side brush that comes with the screw ($9.99). I feel like a queen with “Jaime” and my corgi LOL.
Very good helper

This little vacuum does a great job. It needs very little monitoring…you have to pick up the stuff that a vacuum might not want to inhale and you have to block it from where it should not go, such as out the front door, but otherwise it is independent. The only drawback is the ratio of charging time to usable time….it takes about twice as long to charge it as the device runs once it is charged. But for small areas that need a good cleaning, this is the machine.
Very good product, with a few flaws

We received a Roomba 410 as a gift. We used it once or twice and saw how it worked, liked it, but decided to upgrade to a higher model. This was because of some particular feature of our home, which I’ll discuss below.
But first, a summary:
1) Very smart device. Goes around randomly, so it takes longer to clean than you would, but, you don’t have to do it! It manages to find its way around basically everywhere. Very good as getting into tight places, and, at least eventually, finding its way out. Places where you couldn’t vacuum easily, like under tables, shelves, beds, etc.
2) Picks up a lot of of stuff. We have area rugs, and the amount of carpet fuzz this little guy picks up is truly impressive. Its not a total replacement for ever vacuuming, but its pretty close.
3) Very convenient. If you don’t take the effort to clean as much as you should (or even if you do), its a great time saver to just press a button and let the thing roam around for half an hour or so. Its a real time saver if you’re so inclined.
Downsides?
1) Well, its not cheap. Especially the higher ones. Make sure its worth your while for the convenience.
2) This basic model doesn’t have a lot of the more ‘intelligent’ features. Our biggest problem was it couldn’t handle our rug tassels. It might be one thing if you had a small rug you could move, but our entire main room is covered with an area run that has probably 10-12 feet of tassels on either end. It would suck them up, and, while it could get itself off, would get stuck probably 20-25% of the time. This meant we were pulling it off and starting it back up every 10-15 minutes. A real hassle.
iRobot’s advice is to fold the tassels under, but you have 20+ feet of tassels like we do, that’s a major annoyance.
It also had trouble with even moderate bumps, such as where we have a cable wire going under a rug. I would only use this original 400-series if you have an home without any hassles, very few wires, bumps, or anything else to get caught on. If that’s your situation, absolutely buy a less expensive 400 series. If not, splurge on the 500-series, which handles those situations like a champ!
So, I give it 4 stars because it does have the things it can’t handle. But if your home doesn’t present those kinds of obstacles, its a great choice.
(I will be posting a review on the 530 we got instead, but not for a while, because I want to see how it handles and performs over at least a few months first)
It’s Great

I hate housework. I don’e even like to vacuum. This robot vac works as advertised and I love it. It entertains the cat as well!
Nice product

Since I’m not in the US I had a small problem with the charging cord, its supporting 120V only. Its not like most electrical products that’s supports 120 and 240V. I bought a converter and its worked very well. That’s it, other than that its great product.
Needs frequent help
Rating:3 out of 5 stars
When I bought the product I thought it would run a mission while I wasn’t at home and I would seldom see it operate. Wrong!
It needs help on every mission. Sometimes it needs help five or six or seven times on one mission.
It gets stuck on the dining table legs (round bars along the floor). It gets part way on top of a leg, then can’t reverse and get off of it. If I’m lucky that happens once. If I’m not, I get it off the leg, it moves about two feet then returns to more-or-less the same spot and gets stuck again. Sometimes it will get stuck on the dining table as many as five times in one mission.
It gets stuck on the entertainment center stand (a flat bottom less than an inch thick).
It gets stuck between a bed leg and the wall.
Its path is unpredictable. On one mission it will go into the kitchen. The next time it won’t. (Nothing is blocking its path, it just never goes in the right direction.) One time it will go through a bedroom door, the next time it will pass in front of the open door repeatedly, but never choose to enter.
The bottom line is it doesn’t save much time. Between getting it unstuck and cleaning it, it would be just as easy to vacuum the house myself.
A very successful gift

iRobot Roomba 410 Intelligent Floorvac Robotic Vacuum Cleaner, Red
I recently gave this to my sister for her birthday. As her signature decor is red I bought a red Robot. She loved it and bragged about her gift to all her friends.
So useful!

I’m so happy with my Roomba purchase. We just moved into a new house and put wood floors down, but we have 1 big dog and 2 messy cats, so hair, litter, and general debris becomes a problem fast. I just run this baby around every day or so, and our house stays clean.
We have carpet upstairs, and I haven’t really tried to use it up there. The one time we did, it worked well, even on a frieze carpet. However, we have a thick wool rug on top of it in one of the rooms, and it treated the rug like a wall-it never got on top of it. Even if I wanted to try it on the carpet upstairs, the battery would run out too early after finishing downstairs anyway. We’d have to wait an hour or two to recharge it, or just buy a second unit for upstairs. But it cleans our entire hard surface downstairs without a problem.
It’s certainly not the most efficient appliance-if I took a broom or Swiffer to the same area, I’d be done so much faster than the Roomba. But I don’t have to! While the Roomba’s working, I can be vacuuming upstairs, dusting, etc. You just have to make sure that you clean the tray regularly-it tends to miss picking things up when it gets too full. Our animals don’t like it, but they don’t freak out-they just know to stay away!
I bought the Roomba to tackle the mountain of hair and debris that gets generated on our hard floors, and it’s done a spectacular job helping me keep up with it. I am so satisfied and happy with it. I am thinking about buying the Scooba as well!
Effecient and entertaining

Bought the Roomba 410 for my dad who is 86 for Father’s Day. I also have a Roomba, but different model and I would take it to Dad’s when I would clean his house. My mother passed away 10 years ago. He fell in love with it. He would follow it all over the house to watch what it would do. He named it “George” and is so entertained by it. Dad is very active but had his hips replaced, so this is so helpful and as he says the most fun toy he has had for a long time. Beverly

Rating:1 out of 5 stars
I owned a Roomba purchased in about 2004 for me by my girlfriend. At first I thought it was pretty slick, but after a while, I decided that to clean a rug, you need a Kirby and that is it. You canrun a roomba over your rug forever, and it only cleans the surface, not down deep where the ugly stuff is.
So it was great for one thing only. Cleaning the hardwood floor under the bed. So this was ok. I had it for 9 monthd when it would stop and do dumb stuff. I called and the service department (who is really busy), and they said it was the stair detector and would send new software. That got it running.
After about a year, it would not go to home base and charge, so I realized the home base was broke, and threw it in the trash. After another year it would not charge from the body of the unit as a direct plug in. So I troubleshot it, and had enough.
I sent it back to massachusetts to the VP in charge of consumer affairs, and never received a reply. Basically told him to use it as a book end. When I went to the ups store, the fellow at the counter said “boy we send ALOT of these back for service.
Conclusion…Buy a Kirby, Oreck, waste your money on a Disson (sp), but realize one thing…this and most other stuff made in CHINA was junk when made, and is a basic waste of money. The longevity is never there!
Buy a real tool like a swiffer, and it does a great job on the hardwood.
I would not take one of these for free!

Great Product/Does’t Last/No Warranty
Rating:2 out of 5 stars
I’ve just been through my third robot in 2.5 years. The purpose is for my 600 s/f wide open dog training space. The purpose is to clean a bit of dog hair and some treats on the ground. My floor surface is rubber. The robot works great for these purposes.
The first, I purchased on ebay. It had a software malfunction after about 10 months of use. Since I purchased it on ebay, iRobot would not honor the warranty. I had to purchase a new unit. At that time, the cost of the unit, outweighed the cost of labor of manually vacuuming the space which also was not as thorough.
The second robot I purchased on amazon.com had a software problem after 11 months of use. iRobot replaced the unit. I am assuming they replaced it with a refurbished model. This robot would get ‘stuck’ and turn off automatically so I had to watch it while it worked which wasn’t a problem since I was doing other things but it required constant rescue. Finally 4 month later, the untit stopped to have any suction whatsoever.
In trouble shooting with iRobot, we found that the brushes were not spinning and they said the unit needed to be replaced. These units have been meticulously maintained – cleaned with canned air after each use. It was shocking to have another malfunction. The kicker is that irobot will not warranty a replaced robot so now I’m stuck and have to purchase yet another unit.
I believe the customer service center is in India and the reps are reading off of cue cards. They can barely understand you. They put me on hold for 30 minutes when I asked for a supervisor. Then I hung up.
I may just suck it up (pun intended) and get a Dyson. I can’t deal with the malfunctions of these units especially since they will not replace an obviously defective unit.
My only other thought is to purchase the iRobot 532 from Hammacher Schlemmer, retailing $329 with a lifetime guarantee from Hammacher Schlemmer (obviously not from iRobot.)
[...]
Does anyone know if the parts for the 532 are the same as in the other robots? I have so many virtual walls, brushes, filters, batteries from my old units. I’d love to be able to use them in a new unit if possible.
Roomba highly rated but watch out what Amazon ships
Rating:4 out of 5 stars
Roomba 410 that ships from the manufacturer (Irobot) is the same price as Amazon 149.99. Amazon ships the standard blue battery and standard charger while Irobot includes the yellow Advance Power Supply (APS) Battery and APS Fast Charger. It’s disingenuous of Amazon to pass this off as the same machine. Beware!
Two Roombas and a Lighter Wallet

When I bought the Roomba and it was working I loved it. I raved about it to people, then one day, it all went bad! I always cleaned out the machine, but one day found that some of the long fur from one of my dogs had wrapped so much around the end of the brush that it jammed into the area that held the brush. No matter how much I tried to get it out, it was jammed in good. The brush now no longer spun.
I contacted the company and they nicely sent me a new Roomba body. The brush worked on that one, but the dust bin kept falling off so the machine was distributing the dirt and fur around the carpet as it picked it up. I taped the bin, but then the machine stopped doing a full cycle of cleaning. It would stop and start in the same spot over and over. So frustrating! Now I’m out of the warranty and they want me to buy another to replace it.
Given all the trouble I’ve had with two separate machines, I’m not about to spend more money on something so fickle. As others have said, when it works, it’s wonderful, but mine lasted into the months, not years. Overall, it didn’t save me time as I would have liked and instead I wasted time and money. It’s too bad, it’s a great idea.

Item was not sent with the Advanced Power System battery, as was advertised. A blue battery was in the unit, which does not have as much cleaning time per charge. Functionally, it was o.k., but I wanted the APS battery and was told that the battery could not be exchanged, so I returned the unit.

iRobot Roomba Intelligent Floorvac Robotic Vacuum, Red
beebeskv1 from Fort Lauderdale, FL says:
Right-on! I named it Robo! I love mine also–same basic Red model my kids bought me for Christmas after bilateral hip replacement, 3+ yrs. ago. Although I do not use it as main vac now, it has outlived two other vacs and cleans edges better, as well as having a “spot clean” button. This button, when pressed, will go round-and-round in a 2′ circumference wherever you need it! My cat and I both love watching it go, and my old carpet fibers actually stand up when cleaning is done. I use it for both carpet and tile, but must plug-up under chaise lounger with throw pillow, as it will get stuck. It cleans cat liter spillage, cat food, and rolls over cords with no problem. I also use the “virtual wall” to block off areas not in need of cleaning. Would like to know where to get a reconditioned battery if/when this one stops working. I let my neighbor with broken arm borrow it, and she was amazed also. Try it, you’ll love it, too!!

Mr. Roomba
Rating:4 out of 5 stars
I call My robot Mr. Roomba. He does a great job and will pick up dust and pet hair that you wouldn’t even know was on my floors. He usually runs for about 45 minutes before he runs out of juice, so re-charge him after each use. It is so nice to know your room is being vacummed while you can keep on doing whatever you are doing.
Coolest Tool in my House
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
Bought one of these for my mother in law maybe 5 years ago, she still smiles every day not having to lug out the big vacuum. Bought another for some elderly crippled friends who laughed and laughed when I gave it them, only to receive several calls regarding how much they loved it and what a good job it did for them. Would not be without one myself, and have given several others as gifts with the same results. I personally have 4 dogs and it keeps up with the dog hair no problem. LOVE IT, LOVE TT AND LOVE IT SOME MORE !
Fun to watch…does a good job too.

I bought my mother this roomba for christmas. She just loves it. It is fun to watch and it actually does a good job cleaning the floor. My mother has high blood pressure and arthritis so vaccuming was very hard for her. This does the trick. I’m happy I bought it.
Died a few days out of warranty
Rating:1 out of 5 stars
Ours died a few days after warranty expired – the brushes stopped spinning although the Roomba still moved around. Irobot service support told us we’r eon our own as it was out of warranty.
Overall, it was a disappointment although it was fun watching it tool around by itself for a first few days. It seemed to cleran reasonably well while it was working.
Amazon cheating customers out of APS battery on this 410
Rating:1 out of 5 stars
The 410 is supposed to come with an APS battery according to iRobot. My 410 arrived from Amazon today with the slower charging and less powerful standard battery. iRobot customer support disavowed any responsiblity and said retailers like Amazon have been playing this game so they can strip the more powerful battery out of the unit and replace with a cheaper battery. Ridiculous. I’ll be ordering directly from iRobot to get the real 410 model with all correct parts
